So while I've been reading up on the WP Mobile team's work I've also been reading up on some new tools on the market - tools that turn your WordPress site into a native mobile app - downloadable from Google Play and Apple stores.
The basic concept is these tools act as a wrapper/portal around your WordPress site. The data is pulled from your site. It's not a mobile site but follows the same styling rules because it's displayed on mobile devices.
Why do this instead of a responsive design? Well, think more creatively. Think of specialized sites that focus on a particular target audience. I'm thinking of BuddyPress sites and other ways I can pull content into WordPress that gets ported to the app. eCommerce, discussion forums - anything you can do with WordPress (which is pretty much anything) you can turn into an app pretty quickly without having to learn new programming languages - unless you want to.
