I created a plugin for Wordpress about a billion years ago, when it was still okay to leave a "this plugin was developed by blah blah" link at the end. it was a nice easy way to get a load of backlinks.
the plugin was basically just a feed pulled straight from my site, allowing people to show a load of upcoming events on their own site. basic information about the events was included (pictures, places, dates, times etc), but of course there was also a link for each event, which pointed straight back to my site.
the plugin is still getting about 5 downloads a week, but most of those are spammy sites, or empty blogs, just looking for some free content. hardly any of them have anything to do with my subject matter.
obviously i dont want backlinks like that, so i have nofollowed all of the links on it. so the links are still there, but i dont get any page juice for them.
so I'm wondering... does anyone actually bother creating plugins for wordpress anymore, given that the backlinks are probably too risky to use? i'm sure that google would take a dim view of backlinks like this... or maybe i am worrying too much.
i am thinking about scrapping the plugin completely because its not worth the hassle.
