Forum using Wordpress

Is it possible to create a Wordpress website with a forum. I'd like for users to be able to log in and create a user id and then post comments on the forum. Do I need anything other than Wordpress to get that done? If that's a simple question, forgive me, I'm a newbie.....

WordPress alone isn't going to provide you a ready made forum. If this is going to be an active forum, you should consider using professional forum software instead - especially since you're a newbie. There are plugins out there but I wouldn't trust them for an active forum - but if the plugin is free, it's worth a trial.
