Here is a copy of my htaccess file:

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /about/
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /about/index.php [L]
</IfModule>

# END WordPress

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated ...

Does the RewriteBase really have both a leading and a trailing slash?

whenever you type "http://www.widget.com/about"
it will default to:
"http://www.widget.com/about/"

Is that what you are asking?

No, I mean the actual text of your htaccess. Adding the slash in a type-in is an entirely different process.

I assume that it's a standard
- www to non-www redirect, or
- add directory slash redirect;
what URL did you request to get this response?

... and you're understandably confused because if my mouse-hover is giving me the right information, it says that
example.com/about/
has been permanently redirected to
example.com/about/
?
