COM objects

one of my clients is working on intergrating an online application to a backend db setup and their programmer is using COM objects to do it. I'll admit right up front I didn't even know what COM stood for until I looked it up and I already forgot it.

This dude did tell me that COM will run on FreeBSD. What exactly does that mean to me? Is it a server level thing or what?

The Component Object Model is a Microsoft technology that allows two things under Windows to talk to each other. Since this only runs on Windows, I'm a little confused. Maybe he is talking about another use of the acronym. Or maybe there is some emulation layer that allows it to work on BSD. Can you get a little more info?
