Netscape Messenger Won't Let Go

I've been using Netscape Messenger on a new machine for about 10 months, and I've been meticulous about deleting email and emptying the Trash.

I just did an email import email from Netscape into a new mail client -- and the import found over 22,000 messages (lotsa Spam)! I could only count about 40 visible messages total, including the Trash folder.

So, where were/are all those old files hiding -- and how can I reclaim my disk space?

Did you "Compact Folders" (on Netscape Messenger) before you imported?

No, I didn't. I keep very little in my email client folders (or so I thought!) so I didn't give compacting a second thought. Only about 40 emails were visible in total -- all the folders together.

The greatest majority of the 22,000 imports were old spam, imported straight to my new inbox.

So that's a newbie kind of thing I never learned about. Glad I know it now!
