Hi,

Thanks for any help in advance. I setup IIS today on a windows 2000 professional machine, not the server. Immediately after installing IIS, I can go to IE and type "ftp://localhost" or "ftp://127.0.0.1" and it lists the contents of my ftp directory. If I type in "ftp://mydomain.com", however, it sends back trashed data, most of the time crashing IE. I've even tried typing "ftp://123.123.45.55" directly in and that crashes as well. So I know it's not a DNS problem. Here's my setup.

Using free public DNS at www.minidns.net. Pointing several domains to my house, where the IP 123.123.45.55(random IP) is attached to my Router. From the router, DHCP assigns IP's to 4 computers on my system. Okay, before you think "ahh, it's the firewall", I have opened up all significant ports, ftp, www, pop3, smtp, etc on my router. The router also redirects traffic coming into the main IP and sends it to my IIS computer. My www IIS server runs fine. My FTP and SMTP servers both fail. Should I just download 3rd party Ftp and smtp/pop3 software? Or has anyone seen this before?

I just want to add some further information. I downloaded 3rd party products but they still fail outside of my LAN. I did find out however that typing in ftp://whatever.com from another computer on the LAN works fine. The FTP server serves any computer on my LAN just none outside my LAN. But again I have opened up the FTP port for the firewall. Just to add a bit of further excitement, when you are outside of my LAN, type in "ftp://whatever.com" it asks for your username and password. If there are a max number of people connected, it returns that information to you. It is obviuosly making a connection and communicating. It hangs when it goes to retrieve directory information.

Problem solved. For FTP, 2 ports must be opened up, the main port and the main port -1. So ports 21 and 20. Works like a champ, I'm using G6 FTP program, it's great!
