Sending Text Messages from webserver

Looking at ways to have a website send out text messages

I was reading through the front page disscussion about having a standard for mobile phone web-pages and this got me thinking about something I have wanted to try.

I would like to have a way of sending a text message from a server machine in code.

I know some websites have the ability but I am not sure if they had to make a deal with cell phone service providers or what.

I am thinking something like MAIILMAN or some other similar program with some special headers or mime type to define it as a text message. I do have a dialing pool available to me that I can wire to send the messsage.

Anyone have any experience in doing this? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appriciated.
