When optimising a page for SEO, the file name is usually one of the factors we consider.
EG:
www.widgets.com/free-widgets.html
What about the file suffix though?
It is quite easy to add extra file types to your web server and the associated mime type that instructs the browser what to do with them.
So, you could end up with the same page being served as:
www.widgets.com/free-widgets.brandname
I wonders if anyone has tried this before, and what impact it has on SEO rankings.
I will run off and try out a page or two as well, as it is quite possible that the search engines completly ignore the file suffix in their rankings - but then again, maybe not?
