Change default chmod permissions

Need to change default chmod permissions assigned on upload

Hi, all. Our network center just installed a new Linux/SuSE server running Apache/2.0.49. When I upload files to the new server, they are chmod 600 by default, and I have to change it to 644 in order for the files to be viewable by site visitors. This is becoming a hassle :-) Does anyone know how to change the default chmod to 644? Our server admin doesn't know how.

Most FTP clients allow you to send a CHMOD command to change the permissions of a file.

I know I can change it with my FTP client, and I do that. But it's becoming a hassle to have to remember to change it every time I upload a file, or group of files, sometimes into subfolders on the server. It's especially irritating since our old Solaris/Apache server didn't work this way :-) So I was hoping to find out how to change the permissions that are set by default when I upload new files.

It's a setting called umask, which should be in the configuration for the FTP server. This is from ProFTPD:

# Umask 022 is a good standard umask to prevent new dirs and files
# from being group and world writable.
Umask 022

The umask 022 corresponds to a default chmod of 644 or 755.
