which (preferrably free) ftp client do most use

I've been using out-dated leech for years, because I like a simple interface and bookmarking. But lately it crashes often, so I'm finally letting go and searching for a new client.

I like simple -- easy to see both sides (that's why I don't like using Dreamweavers built-in ftp) -- and bookmarking is a must. Any favorites out there?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, sissykicker.

Assuming you're using Windows, Filezilla stands out a mile amongst the totally free FTP programs:

[sourceforge.net...]

I tend to want to get rid of a few panes to reduce the clutter, but it's about the best out there, free or paid.

I'm a big fan of LeechFTP. Unfortunately, it's no longer supported, and the last version was released years ago, but it's still lighter and cleaner than, for instance, CuteFTP or the horrid WS_FTP.

Found Leech to be a little buggy, but overall pretty good. I use SmartFTP from time to time.

I use IE. I also use the Remote Administrator from Sunbelt Software when I need to transfer files to/from my own servers.

I'm with choster on that one... Leech has been the only FTP client I've ever needed. All of the others are just too damned annoying, with too many "features".

Filezilla! Never changed since I tried it and I have seen a LOT of free FTP clients.

encyclo, I don't know which version of FZ you are running, but there is an option under
Edit > Settings > Interface Settings
which allows you to choose which GUI elements should be visible.

What a timely topic...
I've been a WS_FTP guy since the mid 90s. I have religiously updated with every new version until they came out with WS_FTP Professional 2006. I am usually quite tolerant of software faults and try to work around the kinks, but I've got to say that this software pushed even me beyond my limits. This package should never have made it beyond the beta. Useless user interface changes, inoperable basic functions like sever offset times, etc. This was the first time I have ever demanded a refund for a downloaded software product. I got my refund today and will be checking out some of the gems in this thread instead.

I'd recommend either FileZilla or Core FTP Lite. Both are free, easy to use, and can do batched FTP transfers.

I've been using Core FTP lately, and it's quite nice.

Instead of FTP I use SSH.

I like FileZilla and SSH Secure Shell

Have switched from SmartFTP to FZ more than a year ago. I do not regret it.

Bill you probably saved me some grief. I have version 9.01 which is about a year old and it works great. I'll stop there.

I have used almost all of them, but like LeapFTP for its superb simplicity.

For me, LeapFTP is the best.
