Recent 301 experiences? Redirecting full domains

Who's done it recently, what happened?

I thought it would be nice if we could discuss recent experiences with changing from one domain to another and redirecting with a 301 redirect.

That is: old-domain.tld --> 301 --> new-domain.tld

As for recent: Have you done this within the past six months or so?

• was the move succesful?
  
• did you do other things than change the domain? (eg. especially pages and navigation)
  
• was the new domain brand new or previously used (in any way)?
  
• how long time did it take to change URL in the SERPS (G, Y!, MSN)?
  
• how did your ranking develop (G, Y!, MSN)?

This is not about 302's.

I did that 6 month ago.
I disapeared from Google and had to remove the 301 redirect for googlebot. Google crawls the two domain names but the page rank is for the old domain.
Yahoo followed the redirect but is still crawling the old domain.
msnbot now crawls the new domain.

About 2 months ago I had to do a 301 to a fresh registered domain (due to legal problems with the old domain) and within a few weeks the new domain was shown in SERPS (not very competitive area though).

Sofar we have one report that it worked out okay, and another that it just didn't work out. That's not really enough to get a discussion going, so come on, tell us about your experiences please

Okay, topic isn't interesting it seems.

Actually another member had led me to believe that 302 redirects had recently become easier/safer. As no substantial evidence to that account seems to surface, I'll choose to see that particular incident as a special case for now.

Which means that you should still not move domains unless your really, really, have to.

I'm interested in new 301 redirects, from one domain to another. The new domain can be brand new, as in never used before, or it can be used previously for something else. I would appreciate details about if it was brand new or not, in order to avoid comparing uncomparable things.

Wow, message 7 really says something else if you meant a 301! Thank you for the update!

I bought an existing site widget.com that I want to redirect to the widget section of another site. I will let you know what happens but it will take me some weeks to prepare the transition as some content needs to be changed first.

Done this aroung Jan this year from an old established site to a brand new domain.

Done only the 301 and few links here and there for the new domain.

G took about 6 months, thats during Bourbon, the new domain was ranking for few competitive keywords. About 2 months prior to that, the old 301ed domain was ranking with URL only.

Yahoo and MSN, started ranking the new domain from around 1 month after the 301, though the old domain still indexed in them.

I guess 301 in Google shows some sandbox symtoms to average sites. In case of high NATURAL PR sites it is done pretty quickly.
