I saw a feature on Ringo that collects addresses from Gmail, Yahoo, etc and sends out invitations to them, how does it do this? Do these sites provide an official API that allows this, or is it done using a "pirate" method?

The user probably has to export their contact list in .csv format and then import that file into the other application. I doubt this is done automatically.
