Can you back track?

We have an old box we want to use as a test machine but we only need it to run IE 5 and some other browsers - no need for multiple version install - a bit much like hard work. Anyone know how to remove the curent version of IE and install an older version?

I should add that it is running on Win98.

If you want a real IE5.0, as opposed to a standalone one - and this is the only way you'll get conditional comments to work correctly - then I think your only option is going to be a fresh install of Windows. That'll take you back to IE5.0 (if it's 98SE). Either run as is (complete with security holes), or download the 5.01SP2 installer from browsers.evolt.org.

Thanks Jetboy, sorry for not replying to you answer, this thread dropped off the radar...

as opposed to a standalone one

In all honesty I rarely use conditional comments - i'm just looking to render the CSS, so a stand alone version would be fine. How is this done? Can is be run along side IE 5.5? That would be a bonus. Ta.

I think it dropped off the face of the planet to be honest - I couldn't find it at all!

There are some old threads on WebmasterWorld about running multiple IEs, and it was a bit fiddly. Evolt (on the URL above) packaged up the necessary files for each version of IE and made them available for download.

So just download the standalone IE5 package, unzip it, and click the IE icon. There's no installer. If it's worked, you'll see 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 5' under About Internet Explorer, even though the version number won't be correct.

You should be able to run multiple versions, although I'd check to see if that applied to Windows 98. I run IE5.0, 5.5 and 6 quite happily on XP, but I do still keep a real copy of 5.0 on Win98 around just to be sure.

You might check out www.quirksmode.org/browsers/multipleie.html - but if all you are wanting to do is possibly check CSS, you might check out forums.iwdn.net/viewtopic.php?t=85
