Web server - Load Testing

Is there any free load testing software out there?

Does anyone know of any free load testing software out there? I need to simulate traffic on my server to see how load times are etc. At work I use a program called e-Load but I am looking for something similar that I can use for my personal sites.

What is load testing software.

One thing that load testing software does is send a lot of "visitors" to your site and test to see how many visitors can use your site all at once.

Sites that use web applications, contain scripts, or have custom programming benefit from using load testing software to test the site and test the overall load and performance of the web server.

I don't know. This will be the first time that I will be running my own server instead of shared hosting. I was mainly doing the load testing to see if my php scripts were efficient enough for my needs. I guess we will see what happens when my site goes live.
