Scalable, off-the-shelf directory

I need an off-the-shelf (e.g. Links SQL fits that definition) links directory that has the potential to grow to a ridiculous amount and does not need an expert to customise it.

Would you start with Links SQL if a potential (good) problem is that of size and popularity? Something else (off the shelf only), not a database name such as SQL Server or Oracle?

Initial data set is about 200,000 records.

PS. Noted The Don'ts of Directory Development [webmasterworld.com] thread but this is one of those "we don't have the resources to do it properly" situations where an off-the-shelf solution is better than none
