You will normally generate the CSR from your hosting accounts control panel. You can use the server header checker which is in the control panel of this site (WebmasterWorld)or use [webmasterworld.com...] . It normally should tell you what type of SSL your server is running (example:Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.6b )

You can find out more at the following:

h ttp://www.geotrust.com/quickssl/csr/index.htm
h ttp://www.geotrust.com/quickssl/install/index.htm
(links are broken on purpose - remove the space within http for the links above)

If you go with a GeoTrust certificate you can purchase them at ev1servers.net for $49 (note: I have no affiliation with ev1servers - I just purchase my SSL certificates there)

Nope, I know nothing about Windows servers except unless you really need a windows server... use Linux/Unix flavor instead :)
