how do I reduce high cpu usage?

I'm experiencing very high cpu usage levels on some of my php and perl scripts. My host (Lunar Pages) is getting very shirty about it and I'm baffled. Apart from Googlebot and Mediapartners-Google accessing my phpBB forums nothing else is different. My host assures me the spidering shouldn't be the cause.

How can I monitor cpu usage remotely?

Are there any ways of throttling the cpu usage by my php and perl scripts (some code I can insert into them)?

How can I monitor cpu usage remotely?

If you have access (telnet, ssh) to the site, and they are running a unix variant, try the "top" command. This will give you a detailed, up to the second display of system usage.

Best suggestion would be to go through the scripts and optimize the code as much as possible.
