I have a rather odd question - I'm currently working with an e-commerce website with multiple domains spread over multiple dedicated hosts. One of our domains, which we (were led to?) believe is a solely dedicated server. However, the admin is hedging on giving us root access, making all sorts of justifiable reasons as to why he won't give us the root PW, which obviously limits my ability to backup/transfer/use ssh functions.
Eventually, I did get WHM access on the server, but it's a very stripped down version from what I'm used to seeing - i.e., no backup options, no sql functions, no nameserver/ip functions, no ability to change root password and (obviously) no group management to add users to wheel group, no ability to shut down/start services such as ftp, etc.
Essentially, I'm wondering if we're not working with a shared server as opposed to a dedicated one, since the only reason I can think of not to give us root access would be because it'd be instantly obvious that other domains exist on the server.
Am I way off base here, and is the hosting company just being paranoid and disabling services, or do you think we were lied to?
Thanks!
