which authentication method is best

We are launching a site that sells video downloads. the site was created from scratch vs a turnkey type of site due to our requirements.

Which is the best authentication protocols we should be implementing? this would be for logging in and verifying membership any opinions?

What platform are you developing on? I would highly suggest .Net Forms Authentication against an SQL DB and assigning a ticket. Then you can assign a session variable with the ticket.
