Sites like Flickr and Facebook remember me even when I have cleared the cookies on my computer.
Flickr keeps me logged in until I explicitly log out. Facebook remembers my email address but prompts for the password.
This is even after clearing cookies in Firefox and running Windows Washer.
How do they do this?

Perhaps (and this is pure speculation here) they track the IP you were last seen using, then replace their cookie on their system if you show up again with the same IP?

If you clear the cookies in Firefox, you will be logged out of Facebook and other sites. If the email address is saved, it is because you have kept in in the Firefox Password Manager - it is your browser not the site which is holding the information.
