Hiya,

Ive recently installed a phpbb forum (for my friends to use - mainly as a test project) on my computer which runs as an Apache 2 server. My computer is a fairly high spec Win XP machine.

When someone posts I get a lot of errors regarding emails etc and i have been informed on the official support forum that this is because when the forum runs on Windows it needs a mail server running aswell.

Can anyone suggest a simple free mail server for this kind of useage for win xp please. I have tried ArGoSoft Mail Server but i cant get that to work and the support seems quite poor.

No first hand experience but suggestions/recommendations returned from a quick search include Communigate (free for personal use) and hmailserver (open source). Here's a promising hmailserver tutorial [concept4.ca] too.
