I am shopping for a new desktop system, and want to go with dual monitors. I had thought that I would go with one good CRT and the best flat panel that I can reasonably afford. However, I have noticed that the apapter that would come with the system under consideration specifies "DVI-VGA Adapter to connect 2 CRT monitors...".? I don't think that the 256MB Radeon 9800 XT will be any problem, but what do I need to know about these adapters? Is there any software that I should be aware of to manage the multiple setup? Recommended informational resources?

I'm doing dual monitors right now just by having two video cards ... Windows XP takes care of the rest. On the cards I've seen that can handle two monitors I really didn't care for them, since "center screen" was actually the center of BOTH screens which split up programs/message boxes and was just generally annoying.

Having two video cards (they don't have to be the same, one of my cards is a GeForce 4 and the other is some Matrox card I found in a server). You can still drag and drop across them both, but when you maximize a window it stays in ONE window instead of both.

That's just my preference though. Either way just pop in a second video card and let Windows do the rest. There is an option for "extend my desktop onto this monitor" and you can pick a different resolution (if you want) for the other one.

I don't know anything about the specific configuration you asked, but you can go up to 3 screens with Windows XP (just use 3 video cards) - you don't have to buy anything fancy.

DVI-VGA Adapter to connect 2 CRT monitors

Many of the Radeons have a VGA and a DVI output - so you can connect a CRT and a TV. You'll need to get a DVI-VGA adapter to use the DVI port to connect another CRT - some of the ATI products come w/the cable, some do not.

but you can go up to 3 screens with Windows XP

You can use 10 monitors with any flavor of XP.
