CNAME for example.com and for www.example.com

At the moment, our ISP has the DNS set up for us so that www.example.com is a CNAME for our server's real hostname, let's call it ourhost.ourisp.com. When you type [example.com...] in, it gets resolved to the ip of our server, everything works as intended.

What I now want to do is set things up so that [example.com...] works as well (i.e. minus the 'www'). Do I simply ask our ISP to add another CNAME for example.com to resolve to ourhost.ourisp.com? Not quite sure what the technical description of this is, have found it hard to find help on this topic!

Yes, example.com needs to be a CNAME also, and if you're using name-based virtual hosting, then the Web server also has to recognize example.com and consider it equal to www.example.com.

Also, be sure that example.com has an MX record. If not, then changing where example.com points could affect e-mail.
