For the past few days, sending/receiving emails and logging into ftp have become very slow, takes about 30 seconds each. I can't figure out what caused it and how to fix it.

I had some server management people look at it and they changed the resolv.conf file and said it would fix it but it didn't do anything.

Anyone know the cause or a fix?

My guess would be that your server isn't able reverse-resolve your IP address. Therefore, email and FTP (and telnet/ssh) would take a while to connect.

I'd call your management people back and get them to verify whether or not your server is resolving any IP addresses. (If not, that can cause major mail problems).

If your server seems to be working properly, then they need to check whether the IP you're connecting to the Internet with reverse-resolves. And if not, that's what needs to be corrected (and it might be your Internet access that's the problem, rather than your Web hosting).

I'm using sftp/ssh2 but regular ftp logs in quickly like it should.

A few weeks ago changed my home ip address a couple of times. My server does seem to be working properly, maybe that's the problem.

The email is what's really bothering me.
