Server Returning 301 when it should not

Hi,

Hope some guru here can help with this one because it scares the hell out of me:

My server returns a 301 HTTP codes on some regular URL's but only to search engines.
For example:
65.55.xx.xx - - [08/Apr/2007:05:51:15 -0500] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.0" 301 239 "-" "msnbot/1.0 (+http://search.msn.com/msnbot.htm)"
65.55.xx.xx - - [08/Apr/2007:05:51:16 -0500] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.0" 200 246 "-" "msnbot/1.0 (+http://search.msn.com/msnbot.htm)"

How the hell this can happen?
It happens throughout the server on many pages but only for search engine bots which is going to screwup my site I guess!

Do you have anything in your .htaccess file that would be calling for a permanent redirect for these user agents or IPs?

Could there be multiple copies of the htAccess lying around in some folders on your server.

Could it be that someone's linking to you with/or without the www infront of the domain ( assuming you redirect one to the other )? I see this also (only with bots), and it's almost always been because someone linked to my site like:

example.com, instead of www.example.com

If this is the case, it nothing to be worried about assuming you use only www or non-www for your site. Hope that makes sense :)
