I am setting up a server for multiple websites. Instead of buying a domain for the underlying domain, can I use a .info as an underlying domain.

For example ns1.domain.info

Does this affect the types of domains that can be on the sever or the SEO aspects associated with the server?

You lost me there. What's an underlying domain?

Are you talking about subdomains?

a.example.info
b.example.info
c.example.info
d.example.info

Looks like he's talking what using a .info domain for the DNS server.

You can, but you will incur a slight penalty, unless your other domains are also .info domains. This is because of "no glue records" in the root servers. To avoid the "no glue records" penalty, your nameservers should be in the same registry as the domains that they are serving.

There's absolutely no reason to do this, though. Just put the nameservers is the domain of your choice, from among those that you are setting-up websites for. If you do want a seperate domain for the nameservers, assuming your domains are .com, make sure it is a .com or .net to avoid the "no glue records" penalty.
