Here's what we would like to do: There is an event that we want to webcast on our site. The idea is that someone from our staff will be present at the event with a camera. That feed needs to stream live on our website as it happens.
I am totally in the dark on this one. I suppose the camera needs to be hooked up to a laptop that is able to upload the stream, but what do we need to make this happen? Any special software?
Your help is appreciated. And please pretend I'm a small, stupid child, because that's my level of expertise on this subject, so don't be afraid to state the obvious.
Thanks :-)
It depends on the level of quality you plan to use, how long the stream will be, how many expected viewers there will be, and several other factors. If you're just planning on webcam quality, then there are simple Java applets that could do the basic work. If you're looking at a popular major live event with nearly live streaming then you need some heavy duty hardware in place with streaming servers and a lot of available bandwidth.
A good place to start looking is past threads on WebmasterWorld about streaming video [google.com].
