decent hosting companies?!

I did a similar thread about registrars (where i asked for hosts, too), but I think I'll have more chances of getting an answer here...Im looking to get into Internet Marketing+SEO and have to choose a host (for my own sites)..Ive done some reading up, etc. but the number of providers is simply an information overload....lol Can anyone of you guys tell me what their favorite hosts are so I can check them out?

I can read as much about hosting technology as I want, but I can't find out what hosting providers give you few or no problems and what hosting companies give you a bunch of problems, so I help somebody can help me out.

Is Dreamhost okay? I thought it'd be a good idea, but then I heard a competitor was using a slogan in which they make an allusion to the problems that come along with Dreamhost. So this has me..well.. a bit confused ;-(

Also: Should I pay for a year b/c offers are so much cheaper or should I pay month-by-month in the beginning to see if it's a host worth spending one year or longer with?
