While using mobile phone for laptop

I am experimenting with using my mobile phone to provide internet connection for my laptop. The phone company charge £7 per MB so I want to limit internet use when using the mobile. Sometimes Windows (and other software) will automatically collect updates. This is not a problem when I'm in the office with the laptop on broadband connection. However, if I'm using the mobile for connection I want to suspend/hold any automatic updates.

Is there a way or software, that will allow me to prevent windows or other applications automatically connecting to the internet, I would need to specify that my browser and email are allowed to connect.

You could set up separate Windows Profiles and have one setup for each environment. In the remote profile you would simply set all the updates to off.

Thanks Bill

Is a profile a 'User Account'?
Is this what you mean:
1: In 'User Accounts' > setup a new account, called 'Remote'.
2: In the 'Remote' account go to 'Security Centre' and change settings for 'Automatic Updates'.
3: Then log in as Remote when using the mobile for connection.

Have I got the right idea, or am I missing something?

You're on the right track. I'd been looking at hardware profiles that day and the terminology stuck. A new user was what I meant.

You can duplicate your current profile and just change the update settings on the 'Remote' account. That way you won't lose all the customizations of your primary profile/account.
