Hi,

I'm having a huge problem with CuteFTP. I hope someone will be able to help :o)

Whenever I connect through FTP it will except my username and password and then it will say:

STATUS:>Retrieving directory listing...
COMMAND:>PASV
227 Entering Passive Mode (207,150,192,12,158,91)
COMMAND:>LIST
STATUS:>Connecting data socket...
425 Can't open data connection.
ERROR:>Failed to establish data socket
ERROR:>File error

It would do that most of the time, but there were a few times I was able to get through and start uploading files. Most of the time it would say:

230-WARNING! 1 bare linefeeds received in ASCII mode.
File may not have transferred correctly.

I am so desperate right now! Help!

Thanks in advance,
Crystal

whitepacifica, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Any number of things could be wrong. First I'd make sure PASV mode was off and set the rest of the server settings to automatic detection/default settings (everything except your uname/pwd).

To double check the cuteFTP I'd get a copy of Filezilla (free FTP client), install and use it to see if you can make a connection with that.

If you're still not getting in reliably then I'd venture that your host has some issues or your connection is suspect. What type of connection are you using - modem, cable-modem, DSL?

I have a cable modem.

I tried Filezilla and it basically did the same thing. It got to "LIST" and then it timed out and said it couldn't retrieve the directories list.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm starting to think it's the server that my host is using. I'll contact them.

Thanks again :o)

Yeah, it's sounding more and more like the host has some security in place - or something screwed up.

I'd make sure PASV mode was off

And if that doesn't work, make sure PASV mode is on! I used to use a host which required this, as their load-balanced server setup made it mandatory. In that case, not have passive mode enabled caused some of the same problems you are describing.

Worth a try ;)
