One of my clients doesn't have any inventory control or even a proper cash register. They simply put prices on tags and then key the amount manually with each sale.

I am building an online store for them. It's important to maintain inventory at all times to avoid apologetic emails to people that bought something and it's not in stock.

I'm looking for some sort of software that'd keep up with the inventory (barcodes & scanner) and allow for simple checkout. Also it'd be nice if it integrates with some popular shopping cart or at least has an API.

Have you ever dealt with something like that? Thank you!

There are many, many, packages available commercially today that will handle all of this. I don't think you need to program anything for him, unless he wants something very custom.

Many web hosts provide these types of shopping carts/front ends that include POS and inventory control.

I've been looking for a while and didn't find anything that integrates nicely with good shopping carts (Monster, X-cart, Geo, etc...). Several POS systems have their own carts, but they are real crap.
