I did this once with the same version of Thunderbird and ran into some weird probs. It seems that even if you get all the files in the right spot, there are some config files for users etc that don't necessarily recognize the files.
I run a batch file on startup which makes a zip copy of the dir and subfolders.
The directory is usually c:\documents and settings\your user\application data\thunderbird\
You need to back that up when thunderbird is not running. If using dos batch files you can detect if thunderbird is running as a parent.lock file will exist in your profile directory.
The reason you got into some problems was probably due to the profile directory being a different name.
