I have a client who has redesigned its site and only has on the page the new url that the user should go to. Im not sure which redirect is best to use: 404 or 301? I want to make sure that the redirect will not hurt their SEO efforts. Any suggestions?

I just did the same thing about a month ago and I put up a 301 permanent and the SE found the new site great and within the month I was back to the same positions.

Make sure you get the people who link to the old site to update their links to be the new URL too.
Make sure that they all use the same URL too, either: all with, or, all without, the www.
