Streaming Media Newbie

Haven't touched webtech in a year..suddenly thrust into webstreaming

Hiya, just got a new job on my local university campus. For the past year or so I've been out of touch with web developement...

One of the primary tasks of my new position is to improve the current media streaming infrastructure. The catch? I've never done streaming before.

So, I guess my primary question is where can I go, what can I read to get "caught up" in a sense, to what is current practice. There are products I'm looking at, but I want to know what people are using in real-world applications.
