ISP doesn't provide SMTP server - What to do?

Can I use third party SMTP services?

Hi all

We're based in a serviced business centre in the UK, and they've switched to a broadband ISP service provided by NTL (one of the largest ISPs in the UK). However, much to my surprise, they do not provide an SMTP server for outgoing emails. In all the Outlook Express configuration guides, Microsoft always says that SMTP server information should be obtained from your ISP. But clearly not in this case.

So what do I do now? Are there any 100% reliable SMTP service providers out there? Will there be any spam issues? Are there any other solutions?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Jimmy

You can sign up for a cheap dial-up ISP service then point your e-mail client to the SMTP server. In the USA, I did that with NetZero (when it was free). I hope they don't block port 25.

There are other solutions. If you have enough processing power, install your own server. Obviousl, it does depend upon the traffic level you're talking about.

Is this the same as ntlworld.com?

If so, their help page says:

smtp.ntlworld.com

is the SMTP server.

When I went onto BT Broadband (as opposed to BT Openworld) recently, I discovered the same problem - namely that it did not support SMTP - a similar forum helped me by pointing me to Smartpost http://www.freddys-utilities.co.uk/smtp/index.php

As it says, "SMarTPost is a SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) Server. It enables you to send mail directly from your computer, without needing an external mail server. "

It worked for me and I used it for long enough until I realised that I could still use BT's mail server (unofficially)

To solve a similar problem, I installed the SMTP-server on my computer from Windows 2000. It's there along with IIS.

When I realized that hackers are interested in that, I configured it to work only from the IP-address of my computer.

Hey Jimmy

If it's a business NTL account then try smtp.ntlbusiness.com that works for us.
