what in the world is .smi and why in error logs?

Big mystery here. We have a site with .avi files and we have some entries in the error logs that show that the file could not be found BUT the error log shows the file with .smi extension. Now there is not a single file with that extension on our server!

Could users be typing that in to the address bar or some media software auto requesting our .avi file with .smi extension?
