Commerce One Releases Open Source DocSOAP XML Developer Kit for Document Style SOAP.

This will be a rival to M$'s XDocs due out this summer as well as to the Altova's XML Spy but the possibilities extend far beyond them. This is good news for the industry as it provides some of the necessary tools and allows for the creation and wide spread use of standard schema's within a business for use with documents. The biggest news here is that the Open Source industry is trying hard to provide the tools sets to build reliable and easy to use web based services.

Quite interesting, and probably even more powerful than it looks at first sight.

Unfortunately, it omits the part that I have the most trouble with. Does anyone know of a decent and affordable tool to create XML schemas? Most toolkits and frameworks, including this one, seem to assume that you just have those. Of course, the schema definitions or DTDs are the part where the deepest XML knowhow gets distilled into...

Define affordable. ;)

You can write your own schema builder with PHP or other script language.

If XML Spy isn't your cup o' tea then you might want to give XMLwriter a try - about $80 I believe.
