Hello, I have 2 sites on the same webhosting outfit - all day today when I try to see my sites, I get the message
'we can't find www.mysite.com. I get the same message for the homepage of the webhosting company.

I live in a remote place where they just got the internet 2 years ago.

I wrote to the help desk at the webhosting company and they said everything was up and running there.

Can anyone shed some light on what might be wrong? Or maybe just explain to me a little how this stuff works?

Thanks, Patricia

just explain to me a little how this stuff works

Envision a connection to your website in three parts:

1. Your computer connects to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Their job is to connect you to the Internet.

2. The Internet is a series of computers and devices designed to exchange data at very high speeds.

3. Your hosting company delivers web pages onto the Internet for your visitors.

When you can't surf to your site, the problem must first be localized to one of these 3 areas.

Your host indicates that they have no problems so item 3 is probably OK.

Contact your ISP and discuss the problem with them. They may indicate that they have a problem or that the people they buy service from (item 2, the network) has a problem.

There are things you can do to confirm what you're told. If your neighbor can connect to your site using a different ISP, the network (item 2) and your hosting company are working properly. If a friend at the other end of the country can connect, but neither you nor your neighbor can connect, your host is OK and the network is probably the problem area.

A little simple detective work will usually help you decide who to yell at! ;)

Thanks, that is interesting. I think there is just one provider in town. I will cross my fingirs and try again tomorrow. It seems to be working in other places because someone tried it for me.

I don't write in much and I definately don't answer questions because I am so new to this, but I read webmaster world for about a half hour a day and I always learn something new, so thanks to all.
