Can some one else on their own change DNS of my site

A big webhosting company seems to have done it..

...and we are just left wondering as to what happened.

I am webmaster for the site in question. The owner says he just talked to them (new host) that we would like to move over to their server.. he never said WHEN we will move .. but the over enthusiastic hosting company changed the DNS on their own .. ie. he never gave them his godaddy password.

"On their own" is what I am puzzled about, I have switched DNS back to what it was but .. the site is down for 24 hours now .. hopefully it will be up in a few hours .. but DO these big hosting companies have some special priviliges with registery?

I wouldn't think so, but I've seen it done. Your password gets you into your zone and DNS files. If the entire DNS server is moved, the new location would have all the entries without needin the password.

After all, a database full of sensitive data is still just bytes. Bytes can be moved. They can't get bolted to the floor.
