What is the influence of SSL on the global server performance?

We have about 50% of our page-views runing SSL (about 30.000 SSL PV a day). Logicaly we could reduce the SSL area to the login and thus reduce the SSL Page views by 95%.

Does anybody have experience wether a SSL Page View reduction of this scale brings a decisive increase in server performance?

No personal experience but I scanned some of the sites that this search [google.com] turned up. I didn't find any firm numbers but one page describes CPU load for an encrypted server as an order of magnitude higher than for a non-encrypted server.
