Greetings,

I (we) would like to know what digging tools, sites or applications are out there.

  • Assume I (we) know nothing about this subject.

  • Little known tricks would be a plus.

  • Preferrably free.

  • Please provide a susinct description of the merits and usage of each.

  • Note whether PC or MAC.

    Thank You.

    digging tools

    --

  • spade (noun) A sturdy digging tool having a thick handle and a heavy, flat blade that can be pressed into the ground with the foot.

  • pick (noun) A tool for breaking hard surfaces, consisting of a curved bar sharpened at both ends and fitted to a long handle.

    --

I think it's safe to say that the lack of response up until now is due to a lack of understanding what you mean by "digging tools".

Are you interested in keyword research tools? Search tools? Link analysis tools? Site traffic analysis tools?

With just a bit more clarification I'm sure you'll find many recommendations forthcoming.

Spade was right - Sam Spade that is:
    [samspade.org...]

    Pretty good "digging" tool.

Please, lets stick to free and open source software.

I use dig the domain information groper which is a flexible tool for interrogating DNS name servers. It performs DNS lookups and displays the answers that are returned from the name server(s) that were queried.

There is nslookup as well but since you asked for digging tools I thought IŽll tell you about dig. ;)

Digging, Tracing, Tracking, Lookup all the same to me. Remember? In this case I know nothing.

Heh. Clearly I know even less. ;)

Wasn't familiar with the term "digging", and SamSpade has pretty much served my minimal needs in this department. I'll be looking forward to any additional contributions to the thread that may expand on the subject.

the standalone version of SamSpade is hard to beat,
in fact I have not seen anything come close to it...

Since we are limited to truly free stuff, how about
NeoTrace Express which was always free but now is
abandonware from McAfee? Only free "visual traceroute" I know of...

(just search google for NeoTrace Express 3.25
lots of places still with downloads and screenshots)

    Thanks GeorgeGG,

I did several site searches to no avail. Now, if I'da used DNS as a keyword I mighta done a bit better.

    Try dnsstuff.com [dnsstuff.com].

    You could also try visualware.com [visualware.com] and hexillion.com [hexillion.com].

Neither of the last two seems to be working at the moment, but I just used them two days ago and they were fine then. The sites may be down for maintenance.....

<edit>Can't give you a good description, 'cause some of the info's a bit more than I need right now. But they all seemed pretty comprehensive in the info they provide.</edit>
