For the past three months I have been getting a lot of automated submissions from a piece of software that users can download to auto submit their websites. I run a small scale search site and have been getting literaly hammered by their submissions to the extent that I gave up on running my own database and now use a third party provider. I am now getting about 20000 code 404 hits due to the add url script being removed. what i want to do is use htaccess to direct all this traffic the software companies homepage. I know it sounds very unethical but I have emailed them on countless ocasions and I feel this is the only way to get my message across. I will set up the htaccess and email them stating exactly what I have done and perhaps then , they might listen. Can anyone see any implications of doing this? after all they have been doing it to me for months now.

all advice very gratefully received.

Mack,

can't see any problems with that, but certainly if you provide the information in email form of why you are doing it, then hopefully they will update their submitter program and drop the site auto-spamming.

In the worst (and most likely) case, the program ignores redirects, which means the 301 will have exactly the same effect as the current 404.
