AOL goes out of its way to prevent sound, flash, etc., from playing on their user's email.
Does anyone know of a way to do this that works, or is it just a waste of time?

Welcome to the board Richard.
Anyone have an answer for this one?
That's a fairly specific question that I've not seen considered here before.

Not an answer but I would personally stay away from trying to embed flash in emails. Outlook now disables the active x control needed to display it, hotmail doesn't seem to allow it and most mac e-mail clients we have here the same.

We don't have a problem with Hotmail, MSN, or Outlook, just AOL.

My guess is you're fighting an uphill battle. Even if you did figure out a way to do it AOL has control over thier email and will write some nugget to strip out whatever you put in. You may get lucky and they may not see it/have time to deal with it for few weeks but I'll bet that's as long as it lasts.
