Microsoft has their XDocs product (due out mid-late 2003) and now OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is forming a Technical Committee to "... create an open, XML-based file format specification for office applications."

The TC has put out the call for participants. To learn more go here:

Can't they just adopt .sxw and be done with it?

dingman,
I'm not sure. The .sxw format seems to be applicable only to the files created by the Writer. OpenOffice has an XML FAQ [xml.openoffice.org...] that might help but I'm can't tell why they have a new initiative when it appears that OpenOffice already has the ability to save documents in XML format.

I read that they will be following the Dublin Core XML standards which is a good thing. How that differs from what they already have I can't say.
