Hi all,

I have a client that wants to send me an Access DB so that I can see what he wants on his site. He sent me file.mdb and I can't open it in Access.

Can someone tell me what I need to tell him to do in order for me to be able to use his DataBase?

Thanks

Nick

Could you

File>Export and change type as text file. You would need to do this for each table within the DB.

I know it is far from ideal, but at least you could get at the data.

mdb is the right file.. but depending on what version of Access, you might need the matching .ldb file.

Access is a two-file system.. from 2000 on you don't need to carry the .ldb file with you, but from memory in 97version I had problems when people would send through the .mdb without the matching .ldb.

Do you know what version it was created in?

Aha.. check if it's been created in a later version.

Cross-version compatability in Access is pretty sucky. If I remember rightly, I couldn't open 2000 files in 97 - had to get a client to upgrade his whole office to 2000 so I could build a DB for him. :)

ooo.. just in case it comes up.... There is a function in 2000 to convert back to a previous version of Access.

tools > database utilities > convert database > to prior Access version

It works fine to allow you to get data out of the tables, but don't expect full functionality. A lot of macros and even queries get fried in the conversion
