Hey txbakers,

There is a free tool available from Microsoft called the Web Application Stress Tool [microsoft.com] that should do the job for you.

Once you have installed it you can point it towards your web site/application and give it the number of users it should mimick. You can then view the performance of the server under the load you've set.

The only limitation is that it will not work on secure pages.

Hope this helps!

You might want to try ApacheBench which comes with the Apache source distribution.

second vote for that tool here too, its great.

However, it needs to run as a service so you need win2k to use it, but you can hit any webserver you like with it.

One of its nicest features is that you can set up to record your browser use, so you can open up your site in IE, hit the pages you want to test then save this usage pattern and simulate a bunch of people following this pattern at the same time. Very easy to use.

<edit>pipped to the post - I'm talking about the MS stress testing tool here. </edit>

The other half ran a campaign for this company who do all of this sort of thing on a grand scale. I think they were shipped in when a major online promotion went <belly> up after they had not tested the app and it fell down big style.

I'm very afraid of that exact scenario. It's kind of like the commercial from the early days of eCommerce- the three kids launch their site then watch the orders first trickle , the cascade in. they realize they are in BIG trouble. I think it was for UPS.

thanks for the tips - I'll download the MS product. What's one more MS product anyway.....
