Help,

I try to start my SMTP service in IIS5 but a message comes up ' The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion' ' check event viewer for details' but their is nothing in the event viewer about this error.

I need this as a customer is using CDONTS, and without the SMTP running it will not work. any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Ive entered in the obvious info like the mail server name etc etc. We also have another server running on IIS4 using CDONTS and this SMTP works fine. But i need it running on IIS5

thanks

Is there was already another SMTP service running on the machine taking up port 25. Have a look, and if there is, stop it and it should start fine.

Good Luck

have you tried Google Groups. It seems like it is quite a common error?

I've come across SMTP service problems on boxes with recent versions of Norton Antivirus running - it runs its own SMTP service as part of the package. Might help. Mat

OK, ive looked through google groups, thanks, but still no joy!

Most of them say to install netbeui, which i did, start RPC service which i did, turn off virus software i did....... etc

also registered cdonts.dll for a last resort!

Done it all but still it will not start

Any more suggestions

Try a google search of your specific error in quotes. Then add site:microsoft.com -- Here is the link I found. Is this your issue?
