I am currently submitting a main site for one of my clients which I have no problem achieving search engine positions. My client has asked me to generate one page in four different languages which are hosted on different domains. However I can’t get these pages to rank in any search engines. I believe this technique is called ‘doorway’ pages. Does this type of technique not work anymore or is there anything anyone can recommend?

If you use the 'site search' feature (on the menu at the top) you will find loads of previous posts going over this in detail.
IMO - don't think of them as doorway pages, think of them as information pages. Do them by hand (avoid the doorway page software stuff) and use them to impart some useful info on the product or service and you should be OK.
