May I interest you in email auto-notification?

Would it happen again?

Well, Title and sub say it all :)

Are you still working on a fix?

Yes, it is now six months or more since this worked properly for me. I consider email notifications to be one of the most important features in a forum. It is difficult to actively participate in threads without them and I believe that some valuable threads are just fizzling out because participants are not receiving them.

It seems to be working sporadically but there is clearly still a problem. Please, can we have an update on this?

Works great here. Might want to check your email address you are using and see if it is bouncing. The system automatically turns off email notifications on members that have more than 10 bounces. Or if you have some sort of filter on it.

Brett, I get some notifications but not all. I also get all new thread notifications, stickies and other communications so there is nothing wrong with my email address.

When you say it that works great, was the issue that was outstanding before Pubcon fixed? This has been going on for several months and several people have reported problems. Before pubcon someone, I think it was Hawkgirl, acknowledged the problem and said that you were working on it.

the original, or actual, problem with the emails was fixed and has been working. It was actually broken before, now it is not.

It most certainly is and it has not been working for me since last July. I have been having problems with this since May 2005 ...

[webmasterworld.com...]

Please believe me because I really do have more to do with my time that come in here with imaginary complaints. This really affects my Webmasterworld experience and it would be nice if it got fixed once and for all.

Anyone else still seeing this problem?

Jatar_k does this mean that nothing more will be done to correct this?

no, it doesn't but the actual problem was fixed

now this portion, to isolate why it seems to not be working for some members has to make its way back to the top of the list

isolation of problems we can't reproduce is time consuming. This doesn't actually have anything to do with the email routines as they work, it will have to be tracked down.

Sorry for not answering.
I initiated the thread but lost contact with it after a couple of days without answer/notification

Here is what I did:
I changed my email by a new one created on a brand new site (on my server).
Added wherever I could the "devnull@webmasterworld.com" and www.webmasterworld.com.
checked all filters etc.. so we will see in a few seconds how it looks
By the way I am not sure that I am auto notified of my own answer,
so please could you just enter any reply

Thank you

I have two options
BTW thanks for your reply :)

Sledge hammer or committing suicide
Still not working.

But I had the same intermittent problem (Like BDW has) even before the "Big Crash"
It got to be something with RoadRunner (I used at that time)
Or even worse with Comcast (I presently use)
The real problem is that we became a scared-paranoiac E-civilization
I quite dreaming of getting back any auto-notification.

Could someone leave a reply-notification message on my 800 special WebmasterWorld voice-box,
my cell phone and get my office lights flashing :)

For some reason email notification seems annoying to me. It is like the sticky notification I get in my email whenever someone sends me a message. I go to webmasterworld much more than I check my email, so I find it much more convenient to just check to last messages that I was active in: my messages [webmasterworld.com]. If your thread does not show, then you know nothing new was posted.

I don't know. I like this way, but maybe you don't :)

As did I during the last few days.

For some reason email notification seems annoying to me.

I am afraid that when I am actively participating in a thread email notification is absolutely imperative. Over the last few months my contributions to several threads have been severely hampered through this notification failure. I have revisited several threads after an absence of two or three days and seen things that I would like to comment on but by doing so I would probably only degrade the discussion by taking it back in time.

That is why I believe that notifications are an absolute necessity in this forum. My present situation, where I get some and not others, is probably worse than getting none at all. Currently when I subscribe to notifications on a thread I never know if I am going to receive them.

Is the investigation into this ongoing or will I have to live with it? As I say, I get all sorts of communications from WW apart from most thread notifications. I am virtually certain that the problem is not at my end.

I will however change my email address if you think this would help?

Still not working.

Very disappointing and frustrating when there seems to be no prospect of a solution in sight. :( :( :(

WFM.

I use a Mac and the messages are sent to a spamex addy (redirector).

That's the problem, it works for most people, which is no consolation to those of us who are affected.

They didn't work for a long time, but started working again a couple of months ago.

If you can talk one of the ubergeeks into it, they could check SMTP logs to see where your emails are going.

Did you try deleting your old email addy and putting in a new one? Maybe a Yahoo Web addy or something?

I had the same problem a year or more ago and eventually Brett did something which fixed it until it broke again.

I seriously doubt it's broken. There is almost certainly some issue with your setup. Very often, mail servers have built-in spam protection, and notifiers from CMS systems can easily get caught. I had to train my spam filter to stop s%$tcanning my WebmasterWorld mails.

That's why I suggested exchanging your current addy for an alternate one to see if you can get it working that way.

I did this and it made no difference. Also I get some notifications and not others. I also get all the new thread notifications for forums to which I have subscribed. This leads me to believe that there is no problem on my side.

If it is any help it looks like the problem does not occur when I start a thread. On these threads everything works normally. It seems to be only happening on threads that I join.

i have had the same email address for just over 10 years.
pretty sure it works ok by now.

i signed up for forum notifications and they all work 100%.

i tried email notifications for threads and got one of every couple/few dozen.
i wasn't even sure what it was supposed to do since it seemed to do nothing at first!
useless and unusable.
i'll try again to see if it works better than last time.

on a daily basis i also see threads (in which i have posted) listed without the "my threads" icon.
including threads that i have started!
this makes the "recent posts", "unanswered threads" and forum lists less usable.
it is almost impossible to reproduce due to the transient nature of these lists.

Phranque, thank you, you have pretty much described my problem, which would suggest that there is a bug somewhere.

Email notification (the lack thereof) has been an issue for about as long I've been around here. Used to get them, (long, long ago) but it has been ages and ages since I've gotten one. Been told it's fixed. Been told it's not a problem. Been told this, that, and the other - one of the reasons that my participation comes and goes. Am always drawn back though, because there is so much knowledge here. I've always tried to give as much as I've gotten. Have also always sensed a top-down attitude to the whole subject is a part of the problem.

I've had BDW's problem a while ago - I always got sticky notifications. So I will tick the box below and wait and then I will come back here to report.
